ON VIEW: EDGES OF AILEY AT THE WHITNEY MUSEUM

NEW YORK, NY, September 2024 - Edges of Ailey at the Whitney Museum of American Art is the first large-scale museum exhibition to celebrate the life, dances, influences, and enduring legacy of visionary artist and choreographer Alvin Ailey (b. 1931, Rogers, Texas; d. 1989, New York, New York). This dynamic showcase—described as an “extravaganza” by curator Adrienne Edwards—brings together visual art, live performance, music, a range of archival materials, and a multi-screen video installation drawn from recordings of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) repertory to explore the full range of Ailey’s personal and creative life.

READ: JENNA LYONS ON ANTONIO LOPEZ

NEW YORK, NY, June 2024 - In honor of Pride Month, 30 creative people, ranging in age from 34 to 93, share an indelible memory from an all-important year. Together, they offer a personal history of queer life as we know it today. Jenna Lyons reflects: “I came to New York City because of [the American photographer and illustrator] Antonio Lopez’s 1982 book, “Antonio’s Girls.” Flipping through, you see him admiring the beauty of Grace Jones, Tina Chow and Marisa Berenson. These women weren’t the kinds of beauties that I saw in magazines. They were interesting for their personality and their style. He made me want something other than my sun-bleached, “Baywatch” California upbringing.”

ON VIEW: TEDDY SANDOVAL AND THE BUTCH GARDENS SCHOOL OF ART

LOS ANGELES, October 2023 - Teddy Sandoval and the Butch Gardens School of Art is the first museum retrospective dedicated to the inventive though overlooked artist Teddy Sandoval (1949–1995). A central figure in Los Angeles’s queer and Chicanx artistic circles, Sandoval was an active participant in both U.S. and international avant-garde movements. For twenty-five years, he produced subversive, yet playful artworks that explored the codes of gender and sexuality and continuously mined archetypes of masculinity in his work through his signature icon of a faceless man, often sporting a mustache.

In the spirit of collectivity suggested by the "school of art," this exhibition includes works by other queer, Latinx, and Latin American artists who share similar graphic sensibilities, approaches to media, or thematic interests. Artists in the exhibition include Teddy Sandoval, Yolanda Andrade, Félix Ángel, Ever Astudillo, Myrna Báez, Felipe Baeza, Álvaro Barrios, Sérgio Valle Duarte, Gronk, Ester Hernández, Hudinilson, Jr., Antonio Lopez and Juan Ramos, Marcos López and RES (with Liliana Maresca and Adriana Miranda), Marisol, María Martínez-Cañas, Agustín Martínez Castro, Marta Minujín, Troy Montes Michie, Adolfo Patiño, Claudio Perna, Moises Salazar Tlatenchi, Ana Segovia, Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Joey Terrill, Alex Vallauri, and Martin Wong.

NOW ON VIEW: DIVINE AT THE LOEWE FOUNDATION AS PART OF PHOTOESPAÑA

MADRID, SPAIN; May 2021 — LOEWE and the LOEWE FOUNDATION presents the house’s 10th contribution to PHotoESPAÑA, an exhibition of photography, illustration and film honouring an indomitable icon of queer culture, Harris Glenn Milstead - better known by his stage name, Divine.

Even in his art of drag, Divine defied the rules. His aesthetic rejected a glamorised, elegant vision of femininity, opting instead for the filthy and the trashy. Divine was sexy yet terrifying at the same time, blurring the boundaries between the desirable and the grotesque. This challenge to the acceptable, normative body subverted conventions of beauty in a way that felt tremendously liberating for audiences.

As Waters put it, Divine ‘exaggerated what everybody hated, turned it into a style - and won.’

By shining a light on this pioneer of gender-diverse artistry, who championed liberty and self-determination, LOEWE celebrates the transformative potential of queer performance. For anyone who questioned the establishment, or did not fit in, Divine was the voice of freedom. This exhibition is therefore a tribute to the power of drag to push boundaries, challenge ideals of beauty and redefine who we are.

Grace Jones, Red Coat Series, Paris, April 1975

NOW ON VIEW: A TASTE OF GRACE AT THE ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM

PITTSBURGH, PA; March 2021 — Grace Jones is a groundbreaking musician, model, actress and performer. Born in Jamaica in 1948, (or 1951, according to Jones), she began modeling in the early 1970s and released her first album that same decade. By the 1980s Jones had become an in-demand vocalist and Hollywood actress. Jones was a fearless multidisciplinary entertainer who relished attention–unapologetically androgynous, theatrical and inventive. Andy Warhol and Jones met in the mid-1970s, drawn together by mutual friends and shared interests. While no one remembers the specific circumstances of their first meeting, Jones recalls in her memoir: “One minute you don’t know him, and then you do.”

The two remained lifelong friends. This installation highlights Jones as a cultural sensation, showcasing her career from the 1970s through the 1980s. The gallery includes portraits by Warhol, over 30 photographs and dozens of archival items related to Jones and the formative years of her career. Jones continues to perform and remains an active provocateur and inspiration.

Throughout the 1970s, Antonio and Juan worked with Elio as creative advisors, meeting at the iconic store on 59th street twice weekly. In 1978, they turned the ground floor windows into stage sets, casting Pat Cleveland, Donna Jordan and others to model clothes for the thousands of pedestrians who passed by.

NEW YORK, NY; March 2021 — The Antonio Archives is pleased to have contributed to Bill Cunningham Was There: Spring Flings + Summer Soirées, edited by John Kurdewan and published by Rizzoli.

Bill Cunningham (1929-2016) embraced the colors, carefree beauty, and escapism of spring outings and summer parties as both a photographer and an astute fashion documentarian. His camera captured the showstopping hats and dresses worn by society ladies at the annual Central Park Conservancy luncheons, the gorgeous gowns sweeping the dance floors of tented galas in Newport and the Hamptons, and the authentic vintage outfits sported by young attendees at summertime jazz and swing-dance festivals. For decades, Cunningham's two weekly columns for the Times remained at the top of every fashionista's go-to list, presenting not only a comprehensive chronicle of the looks of the day but also an insider's view of the glamorous parties and philanthropic events that are part of the social whirl. This celebration of Cunningham's genius for capturing magical moments with extraordinary style provides a heartfelt insiders' tribute to one of photojournalism's greatest legends.

NOW ON VIEW: ANTONIO LOPEZ: LET ME HEAR YOUR BODY TALK AT DANIEL COONEY FINE ART

NEW YORK, NY; March 2020 - The Antonio Archives is pleased to present “Antonio Lopez: Let me Hear Your Body Talk” at Daniel Cooney Fine Art, now on view from March 5 - April 18, 2020 (NEW closing date July 31, 2020!). Nightlife, music, and dancing were a cornerstone of Antonio’s social life and studio practice. Throughout the early 1980s, as disco gave way to punk, new wave, and hip hop, Antonio and Juan took immense inspiration from the rise in the idealized athletic body that could be seen everywhere from the runway, to the nightclub, to the male break dancers performing in Union Square.

Featuring 12 black-and-white pencil drawings and 4 large-scale water colors completed between 1982-1985, "Let me Hear Your Body Talk" takes its title from Olivia Newton John’s 1981 smash hit “Let’s Get Physical”, a homoerotic chart topping anthem that permeated the culture. This exhibition showcases Antonio’s departure from the editorial and commercial images which made him famous, and celebrates this little known body of work that emphasis his unique blend of play, rhythm, and queer desire that perfectly captures the zeitgeist
